Well, Teri, I don’t know if this is up your alley or not, but since you know a lot about furniture, I thought I’d ask…

The dresser (or bureau, if you prefer) I inherited from my mother is very good, solid quality. The problem I have with it, though, is that the drawers don’t slide out or back in easily because the parts that the drawer slides on are also made of wood.

If they were metal, I’d just use some good old WD40. What should I use to help these all-wood drawers slide more easily?

    And…IS there a difference between a dresser & a bureau? 🙂

Hello! I do believe a dresser and a bureau are the same…the word you use depends on your generation, most likely. 🙂 Kind of like a sofa, a couch or a davenport. 😀

On to your question…to slick up wood drawer runners, take an unscented white candle and rub it along the bottom of the drawer runners a few times. It may take a few applications, but this should help smooth out the wood a bit, allowing the drawers to slide more easily.

Let me know how this works out if you try it!

And, readers, if you have any other advice or ideas to offer, feel free to jump in…

      Thanks for coming by, Karen!

    Thanks, Teri.

I guess it would depend on how much of gap there is the drawer and runners. Wood tends to wear and splinter over time. If there was enough of a gap I would try and sand any rough surfaces and then varnish them with a high gloss.
