How To Use Books as Home Decor

I love books.  I feel that one can never have too many books.  Unfortunately, my stuffed-to-the-gills bookshelves would argue that point.  Thankfully, books make for some great – and inexpensive – home decor!  Not only do they look great on their own, with a few creative ideas, you can transform your old books into something new and beautiful for your home.

If your bookshelves are bland, perhaps they just need a little rearranging.  Consider arranging your books by color, as the designer did in this photo.  This arrangement takes your book collection to a whole new level of design.

But, what if your books are ugly?  You don’t own gorgeous, vintage, colorful books like the ones shown here?  Never fear!  Cover the books you have with fabric:

Or, for a less permanent option, use custom paper book jackets like these.  Either of these covered book options – and the many others found around the internet – would look lovely stacked on a coffee table, as well.

If you’re tired of the same old bookcases, maybe you would like to make the books into shelves.  That’s right – make shelves OUT of your books instead of displaying your books ON shelves!  Here is one way to do it, found at Real Simple:

Or, how about this idea, using a snazzy pre-made bracket just for this purpose?

Maybe you want to make something new from your books.  How about a new light fixture?

Or, perhaps a decorative letter is more to your liking:

Or, a clock?

If all else fails, use your favorite books as wall decor simply by framing them.  You could also frame just the dust jacket of your favorite books to create simple, inexpensive art for any room.  How about framing some Dr. Suess book jackets for your child’s room?

If you are absolutely not crafty, and you prefer not to create something new from your books, check out all the options for art made from books.  Search for “book art” on Etsy, and you find all sorts of great stuff, like this piece from JoNomi.  These could be hung on the wall or placed on a shelf.

Get creative with the books in your home.  For mere pennies, you can create a new look in any space.
