Before and After: Kitchen Valance

Before and After: Kitchen Valance

If you have a window above your kitchen sink, you probably have an awkward, empty space above it.  Here is a great way to fill that void.

As in many kitchens, the cabinetry in this space is taller than the window, leaving a large space above the window trim.  In addition, kitchens are full of hard surfaces – floor, countertops, cabinetry – and limited opportunities for adding softness to the room.  A window treatment makes the perfect solution to both design dilemmas.

This kitchen has very high, vaulted ceilings.  The valance at the window softens the space, but also helps to tie the cabinetry together.  With an open space, the eye focuses on the void above the window, instead of the beautiful elements in the kitchen, including the custom backsplash and the custom valance.  The valance also makes the window look taller, since you cannot see the top of the glass.

Tips to remember when installing a valance over your kitchen sink:  install it higher than the top of the window when possible, as it makes the window look taller and preserves your light and view.  Also, choose a fabric that includes colors from several other elements in the room; it will help to tie everything together.

Window treatments are a great finishing touch for any room; give them a try in your kitchen!
