Sustainability should always be a consideration when choosing furniture. Not only are they free of toxic chemicals that may be harmful, they are also great for the environment. With the emergence of the eco-chic home decorating trend, it is now easier to find pieces that are environmentally considerate. Here are some of ways to help choose sustainable furniture.

Know what goes into your furniture

Buying sustainable furniture doesn’t only mean choosing pieces that are made from natural materials. It also includes knowing the chemicals that go into its production. Generally, plastic furniture can be a threat in the environment because of the toxins and chemicals used in its production. As for wood and metals, make sure that the products used to paint and finish wood are organic. Ask your local manufacturer about furniture that is free from formaldehyde, PBDEs, and other toxins.

Buy vintage

The purpose of choosing sustainable furniture is to be able to use functional and artistic pieces that leave a very minimal environmental footprint. When you buy antique furniture, you are choosing to cut down on the resources that are needed to make new items.

Numerous antique furniture pieces are handcrafted so they were made with less energy compared to modern furniture. Visit shops such as Antiques on Old Plank Road for authentic, good quality pieces.

Choose sustainable materials

Eco-chic is the new chic. Choose furniture made out of sustainable materials such as bamboo and organic upholstery.

Bamboo is technically a type of grass that has very similar qualities to wood in terms of texture and durability. Unlike trees, bamboo does not take years to grow so its sustainability is not an issue. It is also grown needing little to no pesticides.

When buying new furniture or repairing the ones you already have, choose non-toxic organic materials such as an organic mattress, organic cotton, or organic fabric. These materials are great for the environment. Check the label before purchasing items to see if it’s chemical free. You can also consult your antique dealer and local artisans on where to find these materials.

Repurpose

Reusing pieces that you already have does not only give more value to your purchases, they also help you save the environment. Experiment with fresh ways to use antique items such as an old window for a photo frame or an antique suitcase for a coffee table. This way you can add a new twist to your house and see your beloved furniture in a new light.

Aside from functionality and visual appeal, keep the environment in mind when making purchases—especially if they are items for the home.
