Granite Countertop Test

Granite Countertop Test

I just ran across this post on This Old House, and wanted to share it with you.  I thought it was a great idea for helping homeowners decide what countertop is best for their lifestyle!

The folks at This Old House recommend getting a scrap piece of the granite you are considering for your kitchen, then taking it home and testing it with various substances to check for staining, etching and color changes.  You can see the original post here.

I find that some homeowners are wary of installing natural stone countertops in their kitchens due to the potential for staining and etching.  Etching is when the polished surface of a stone wears off, often due to exposure to acids such as vinegar or lemon juice.  Every granite color has a different staining potential due to its physical make-up; some are more porous than others. Marbles are even softer, making them even more susceptible to stains and etching.  Testing the color you are considering ahead of time is a wonderful way to make sure it will perform the way you expect it to.  And, of course, you can try this with granite, marble, quartz or any other type of countertop you may be considering.

What do you think?  Is this something you would try before you remodel your kitchen or bath?  If any of you have tried it, please leave a comment and let us know how it work for you!
